5 Powerful Herbs/Spices and their benefits

Usage of herbs and spices has been incredibly important throughout history- at least for us Indians!
A sprinkle of Cinnamon and Cardamom in your Morning tea/Coffee and Using Haldi(Turmeric) in almost every Indian curry is a must and which elevates the taste- but these spices and herbs were initially celebrated for their medicinal use, well before their culinary usage.

So, here are the health benefits of some of our favourite herbs and spices-plus delicious ways to use them.

1. Turmeric
Ease inflammation, slow cancer, treat depression and other conditions.
This golden looking spice gets a lot of attention in Indian Kitchens. That’s thanks to its high amounts of curcumin, a powerful antioxidant. Studies show curcumin can help treat a range of health problems, from minor toothaches to chronic conditions like arthritis, heart disease and diabetes. Researchers are also studying its potential as a treatment for Alzheimer’s disease, as well as colon, prostate and breast cancers.

2. Basil:
Combat the negative effects of stress in the body, maintain stable blood sugar levels and promote longevity.
Indian Holy basil is a Sacred herb in India and for right reasons! The plant is considered the “Mother Medicine of Nature.” It’s been revered since ancient times as an herb that can promote a healthy body, mind, and spirit. Holy basil is used to treat many conditions, including H1N1 (swine) flu, diabetes, the common cold, headache, fever, stress, upset stomach, earache and more.

3. Ginger:
Soothe nausea, fight arthritis pain.
Ginger is well-known for easing a queasy stomach. Studies show it can help soothe morning sickness, as well as nausea from surgery or chemotherapy. And while there’s no hard evidence it works, many people take ginger for motion sickness.

4. Cardamom:
May Lower Blood Pressure, Cancer-Fighting Compounds, Anti-Inflammatory Effects.
Cardamom is a spice with an intense, slightly sweet flavour that some people compare to mint. It’s known to soothe an upset stomach, and lab studies show it may also help fight inflammation.

5. Cumin:
May protect against type 2 diabetes, may also protect against heart disease
Cumin is a staple seed or ground spice in so many recipes. It’s warm and earthy flavour is perfect for deepening the flavour profile of many different types of cuisine. Vitamin E which is found in cumin acts as an antioxidant. Vitamin E is particularly good for healthy, glowing skin. It’s also pretty high in vitamin C, so like many spices on my list today, it can be a powerful immune booster.
